Pilat, pila or pyla… What is the correct spelling?

In all official documents, we find the spelling « pilat ». However, we still see a lot the word « pyla », which is used both in France and abroad.

« Pilat » is derived from the Gascon word « pilàt » whose meaning is « pile ». The Pyla sur Mer seaside resort, created in 1920, adjoins the north of the dune. This proximity is undoubtedly at the origin of the use of the name Dune du Pyla

When driving towards the Arcachon basin, you will see panels indicating the direction of the Dune du Pilat and the Dune du Pyla. It is even possible to find the name « Dune de Pyla ».

You can also find Pila or Pylat on the internet.

But the official name is Dune du Pilat.
